Baby wraps

With a baby wrap you can keep your baby close to your heart. It's also a practical and comfortable way to carry your child as it supports your shoulders and arms while keeping your hands free. At Coracor, we offer a wide selection of baby wraps in various colours and prints, all made from 100% organic and non-toxic materials. It's a good choice for you, your baby and the environment.

Why use a baby wrap?

Carrying your child in a baby wrap is cozy, practical and ergonomic. Compared to holding your baby in your arms, a properly tied baby wrap offers support for your arms, shoulders and back. You can also carry your baby for a longer time period, which has many benefits for both you and your baby. It offers a great sense of security by providing the closeness your baby needs. To be close enough to feel your heartbeat, movements, and smell, your baby's transition from the womb to the outside world becomes much more gentle. This tender transition and adjustment to the world is very beneficial for your child's well-being and development. At the same time, you learn how to read your baby's food and sleep cues and can respond to them at the right time which results in a content and happy baby.

A baby wrap also has a lot of practical benefits. Some babies calmly sit in a bouncer but most have a great need for being carried and being close to their parent. To carry your child while having your hands free makes it possible to carry out practical chores at the same time. Great, isn't it? A baby wrap can also be used as a more convenient alternative to a heavy pram or bulky buggy for those outside walks, making the baby wrap an excellent practical choice. As the weight of the baby is equally distributed across your upper body, a baby wrap also reduces physical strain which is a real benefit.

Different types of baby wraps

At Coracor we currently sell organic stretchy wraps but there are different types of baby wraps available.

Stretchy wrap

A stretchy wrap is a type of shawl made from an elastic fabric. They are around five meters long, and are tied around the body of the person that is carrying the child. They are best suited for newborns and babies up to one year old (or around 8-12kgs in weight). When the wrap has been tied, you can take your baby in and out of it several times without needing to re-tie it. You can also breast or bottle-feed while wearing a stretchy wrap.

Woven wrap

Woven wraps are thought by many to be the most ergonomic. They are constructed to be stretchy on the bias, meaning they can be used for longer time periods compared to a stretchy wrap. A woven wrap can be used with a newborn baby and for as long as a child wants to be carried. A baby can be tied in various positions with a woven wrap - on your stomach, back or hip - giving you much more versatility. Breast and bottle-feeding is also possible with a woven wrap.

Ring Sling

A ring sling is different from other wraps as you don't tie it around your body, but instead you use rings to tighten and adjust it. With a ring sling you can carry newborns and slightly older children. You carry smaller babies stomach to stomach just like other baby wraps but you can also carry older children on the hip or on your back.

Benefits of using a baby wrap

Offers a sense of security for the baby

For a newborn, every day is filled with new impressions. This can of course be very overwhelming and sometimes stressful. Being close to a parent or other grown up with body contact and movement, sound and smell, brings calmness and a sense of security for your baby. Closeness and body contact increases the level of the hormone oxytocin both for the baby and parent. When oxytocin is released in the body, it brings a sense of well-being, calm and security. To carry your child in a baby wrap makes it easier to smell, touch and kiss your baby, strengthening the bond and love between the both of you. This is also vital for decreasing the development of post-natal depression.

Encourages a baby's natural development

When a baby is being carried in a wrap, it has more of an opportunity to calmly take part, explore and observe its environment. It's easy for a baby to become isolated in a bouncer for example, whilst being carried in a wrap, a baby can be part of your everyday life. Parents tend to interact and talk more to their baby when carried, which has a positive impact on a baby's intellectual and social development.

Studies have shown that children that are carried more often, cry less and sleep longer (and better). To carry your child also stimulates your baby's balance and motor skills, as the parent's movements and the upright position helps the child develop its muscle strength.

A more positive self-image and better self-esteem for your baby

There is a preconception that a child that is often carried in a wrap becomes spoiled and less independent. The truth is actually the opposite, as children that get the closeness they need tend to become independent sooner. In a baby wrap, a baby can experience and explore the world from a protected place. This gives your child a sense of security and calmness that leads to better self-esteem and a more positive self-image.

Practical for the carrier

Let's be honest for a moment. When you welcome a baby into the world, everyday life for a parent doesn't suddenly stop. There are still daily responsibilities and practical chores that needs to be taken care of, especially if you have other children. Using a baby wrap will keep your hands free, giving you a sense of freedom and making it possible to look after yourself, your children and your home.

Better for your back

When using an ergonomic baby wrap, your baby's weight is more evenly distributed over your upper body compared to carrying your child in your arms. It offers better support, and as your baby grows it helps strengthening your core.
